Miljöpåverkan
Piracetam
Miljörisk:
Risk för miljöpåverkan av piracetam kan inte uteslutas då det inte finns tillräckliga ekotoxikologiska data.
Nedbrytning:
Det kan inte uteslutas att piracetam är persistent, då data saknas.
Bioackumulering:
Piracetam har låg potential att bioackumuleras.

Environmental Risk Classification
Predicted Environmental Concentration (PEC)
PEC is calculated according to the following formula:
PEC (µg/l) = (A*109*(100-R))/(365*P*V*D*100) = 1.37*10-6*A*(100-R)
PEC = 0.03 µg/l
Where:
A = 236.52 kg (total sold amount API in Sweden year 2023, data from IQVIA)
R = 0 % removal rate (due to loss by adsorption to sludge particles, by volatilization, hydrolysis or biodegradation)
P = number of inhabitants in Sweden = 10*106
V (l/day) = volume of wastewater per capita and day = 200 (Ref I)
D = factor of dilution of waste water by surface water flow = 10 (Ref I)
Predicted No Effect Concentration (PNEC)
Ecotoxicological studies
Fish (Danio rerio):
LC50 96 h (mortality): > 10 000 000 µg/l
(Protocol: OECD 203)
(Ref II)
Environmental risk classification (PEC/PNEC ratio)
The PEC/PNEC ratio could not be determined because there are not sufficient ecotoxicological test results, hence justifies for the environmental risk standard phrase ”Risk of environmental impact of piracetam cannot be excluded, since there is not sufficient ecotoxicity data available”
Degradation
No degradation data available. Therefore, the summary phrase for degradation to be used is: ”The potential for persistence of piracetam cannot be excluded, due to lack of data”.
Bioaccumulation
Partitioning coefficient
Log Pow = -1.54 (method unknown) (Ref II)
Justification for chosen bioaccumulation phrase:
Since log Pow < 4, the substance has low potential for bioaccumulation.
Excretion (Metabolism)
Piracetam is readily eliminated via the kidneys. Urinary elimination is practically complete (more than 95 %) after 30 hours. Half-life, which depends on renal function, ranges from 4 to 6 hours in young and healthy adults. Renal clearance of piracetam in healthy volunteers is 81 ml/minute (Ref III).
